South32 shares fell 2.46% to A$4.37 Thursday, with about 15.7 million shares traded, making it one of the weakest performers in the Australian materials sector. Space Tech Today: Blue Origin Lands Reused New Glenn, But AST SpaceMobile Satellite Is Lost

Blue Origin recovered its reused New Glenn booster after launch from Cape Canaveral on Sunday, but AST SpaceMobile’s BlueBird 7 satellite was left in an orbit too low for operations and will be de-orbited. AST said insurance should cover the loss and that more BlueBird satellites are in production. AST shares fell $5.41 in premarket trading. The launch comes as competition intensifies in direct-to-device satellite networks.

AST SpaceMobile stock jumps as Telus takes stake — Canada deal and Africa push in focus

AST SpaceMobile shares jumped 13% to $104.89 after Telus agreed to invest and partner on satellite-powered mobile service in Canada, targeting a late 2026 launch. AXIAN Telecom also signed to deploy AST’s network in Africa, pending approvals. Taiwan Mobile and France’s Orange announced separate collaborations with AST for direct-to-device satellite services. About 20.8 million AST shares traded Wednesday.

AST SpaceMobile stock jumps after Telus signs Canada satellite-to-phone deal, takes equity stake

TELUS will take an equity stake in AST SpaceMobile and invest in ground infrastructure to support satellite-to-phone service across Canada, the companies said Wednesday. AST shares rose about 12% after the announcement. Service is planned for late 2026 using standard smartphones and low-Earth-orbit satellites. AST reported Q4 revenue of $54.3 million and a net loss of $74 million.

Your Smartphone Can Now Text via SpaceX’s Starlink Satellites – Here’s Everything You Need to Know

SpaceX’s Starlink has launched satellite texting for ordinary smartphones, allowing users to send SMS without cell towers in initial coverage areas. The “Direct to Cell” service works with standard 4G LTE phones and requires no extra hardware. Partner carriers, including T-Mobile and Rogers, plan to expand the service in 2025. Voice and data features are expected to follow after further network upgrades.
